Do you sell candy from Mexico?
• Lead has been found in some chili and tamarind candy from Mexico
• Lead has also been found in some candy wrappers
• Lead hurts a child’s brain and causes problems that can’t be reversed.
• It is against the law to sell candy that has more than 100 parts per billion lead in California
• Some candy has been banned and can’t be sold in the U.S.
• Any person who sells candy that has lead in it can be fined $500

What you should do if you sell candy from Mexico
• Sign up to get instant alerts about food, including lead in candy, from the California Department of Public Health
• To sign up go to this website. At the bottom of the main page is the section “Program Information”. Click on “Emergency Advisory Subscription Service”. Click on “Jump to Subscribe”
• You can get information by fax, phone, pager, cell phone or email
• Make sure the candy companies you buy from are certified in California
• Ask the companies that you buy candy from for a “Certificate of Compliance” from an independent food quality auditor
• Only sell candy that is certified to be safe for sale in California
• Display the sticker that says “We do not sell candy that has lead”

What is being done about lead in candy?
• The California Food and Drug Branch is testing candy
• When lead is found in the candy a warning is sent out by the California State Health Department
• Mexican and American companies in Mexico are being visited to make sure their candy is safe
• Companies in Mexico that make candy safe from lead can become certified by California
• To be certified in California companies must have their candy tested for lead
• Companies must also be checked by a person who is an independent food quality auditor
• When candy is certified it means that it is lead-safe
